New Postgraduate Course offered in 2008

New short courses, Mineral Processing and Mine Surveying, were introduced as part of the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Masters in Mining Engineering programs for the first time in June/July 2008.

Diana Drinkwater presented the Mineral Processing course which was attended by students from as far afield as Argyle (NW Western Australia), Japan, South America as well as mining company personnel closer to home in NSW and QLD. The course was warmly praised by the attendees, particularly for its combination of theory and practical sessions. Topics covered including crushing, screening, grinding, flotation, leaching, coal preparation etc. It covered most major commodities mined in Australia and is designed to give the non-metallurgist or mineral processor a better feel for the flowsheets and fundamental drivers of the discipline.

The Mine Surveying short course (MINE8810) was developed by Bruce Harvey from the School of Surveying and Spatial Information Systems at UNSW. It aims to give both mining and non-mining personnel an awareness of surveying techniques likely to be encountered on a mine site. Included in the course were the following topics - introduction to surveying and use of survey instruments, location of drill holes, bench surveys, layout of blasting patterns, haul road set out, transfer of control from surface to underground, alignment of underground development, pickup surveys, recording of survey information, control systems, location and selection of stations, bore hole surveys, subsidence surveys, and slope monitoring.
