Collaboration with University of Philippines

The Department of Mining, Metallurgy and Materials Engineering has a long and distinguished history at UP. Currently, the Mining area, in a similar fashion to other mining schools in the Asia-Pacific, lacks staff with the necessary educational qualifications and experience. The University, the mining industry and both governments are keen to build capacity and the Asian Mining Education Network is one mechanism that can assist.

Workshop on Sustainable Development for Mining in the Philippines

A/Prof David Laurence spent one week at the University of the Philippines (UP) in January 2009 as a Visiting Professor to the Department of Mining, Metallurgy and Materials Engineering. The aims of the visit were to spread the word about Sustainable Mining Practices, strengthen the relationship between both universities and explore options for building human resource capacity in the Philippine mining industry. Activities included the following:

  • Discussions with faculty members including Prof Rowena Guevera, Executive Director of the National Engineering Center, Prof Leslie Diaz, Chair of the Department,  Prof Alberto Amorsolo, former Chair and Prof Eligia Clemente regarding education and research
  • Meetings with Australian government officials
  • Meetings with mining industry officials including Johan Raadsma,  CGA Mining, (ex UNSW) and Mr Artemio Disimi, Chairman of the Chamber of Mines
  • Keynote speaker at the Sustainable Development for Mining in the Asia-Pacific Region mining seminar-workshop.

A range of initiatives have been proposed and are under consideration.
