A university is home to a vast array of people studying and undertaking research over a broad range of fields to service the educational aspirations of individuals and ensure the functioning of the community.

In order to effectively manage the various learning and research activities, the University of New South Wales (UNSW) is organised into a number of Faculties which cover the broad disciplinary areas extending from the Arts to the Sciences, from Engineering to the Built Environment, and from Commerce to the Law.

Within each Faculty such as the Faculty of Engineering are Schools which are the focal point of a specialist discipline. The Schools are home to academic staff who collaborate within a particular field of knowledge. The role of the Faculty is to foster improvement in educational programs, ensure consistency in education standards, develop synergies between disciplines, promote research activities and collaboration within and between Faculties and to promote the engineering profession within the broader community.

The various Schools with the Faculty of Engineering offer one or more academic Programs leading to either undergraduate or postgraduate qualifications.

Where Schools are large in terms of the number of students and academic staff, there can often be specialist areas within those Schools that are organised into Departments.
