During the Easter break in April, 2007, 34 1first year mining engineering students embarked on a 4-day visit to the mines in central west New South Wales. The students were accompanied by three staff and two 4th year students.

The purpose of the trip was to provide the 1st year students with a broad overview of the diversity and complexity of the Australian mining industry and allow them to gain some first-hand insights into how the industry operates.

The students visited Ulan Coal mines, north of Mudgee, on the first day of their trip. Apart from visiting both the open-cut and underground operations, the students also got the opportunity to visit their Bobadeen desalination plant. Their next stop was at Rio Tinto’s NorthParkes mines where the students got the opportunity to learn and see the block caving mining method that is undertaken at this site. The third major site inspected was the gold/copper Cadia Valley Operations of Newcrest, located near Orange. Here the students visited the Open-Cut operation.

At all mine site visits, the students also spent time inspecting the associated milling/processing plants where product ore is liberated and concentrated; together with other surface infrastructure and environmental management activities.

This provided the students with the opportunity to see coal and metalliferous mining – both underground and surface, in large scale, state of the art mining operations.

The remaining group of 1st years consisting of another 34 students will visit the same place during the mid session break in September. The students raised over $17000 in sponsorship towards the cost of the trip. All agreed that the trip was a great success, and their knowledge and commitment to become mining engineers has been enhanced as a result.

The support and cooperation from the mines involved is greatly appreciated by the students and staff of the School. And finally thanks to the sponsors for their financial support, without which this trip would never have been made possible.

The students and staff in the School would like to thank the following sponsors for their contribution:

  • AusIMM
  • BHP
  • DBT
  • DSI
  • Hanson Burrell
  • Minesite Technologies
  • Minova
  • Rio Tinto
  • Roche Mining
  • Xstrata
